LILLOOET —  Good news when it comes to the Xusum Creek fire near Lillooet as there was no new growth over the weekend.

The fire remains at 500 hectares in size and 25 per cent contained.

“It’s in a pretty good place, it didn’t see any considerable growth over the weekend,” says Fire Information Officer Brenna Ward with the Kamloops Fire Centre. “It is still classified as ‘out of control’ but resources have increased today. We are now sending out 82 personnel, including machinery and air support.”

She says one of the top priorities for crews today will be preparing for the expected wind shift this afternoon.

“As well, work continues securing the south flank so that the fire doesn’t spread into the valleys.”

Ward also has a specific message for boaters in nearby Anderson Lake: stay away from BC Wildfire Service crews.

“We really, really want to emphasize our firefighters and our staff are working very hard to contain this blaze and we would like the public’s support. We would like the public to support our firefighters by staying clear of the wildfire area. We did have interference of the public using their recreational watercraft, kind of getting in the way of helicopters,” she says.

“We saw some extremely dangerous behaviour over the weekend that puts our staff at risk and puts the public at risk.”

The suspected human-caused fire ignited last week prompting an evacuation orders and alerts in the area.
