Multiple apartments gutted by early morning fire in Kamloops

KAMLOOPS — An apartment building along the 900 block of Tranquille Road has been heavily damaged by fire this morning. 

Kamloops Fire Rescue responded to a report of a structure fire shortly after 4 a.m.

Platoon Captain Troy Grant says flames were visible on several floors of the complex upon arrival. 

“The fire was extensive to the west end of the building,” Grant said. “There was a room gutted on the second floor with heavy smoke damage to the rest of the second floor. The third floor we had two apartments that were completely gutted with heavy smoke damage to the entire third floor. The first floor remained relatively untouched.”

Grant says investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire, adding it’s believed to have started on a balcony on the second floor, perhaps a cooking fire.

“All occupants of the building have been evacuated, and they are at a receiving centre over at McArthur Island, they were bused there on a city bus,” Grant said. “That building will be closed to them for some time.”

He says Emergency Social Services will be finding lodging for the evacuated residents.
