First fire prohibitions in Kamloops Fire Centre start Tuesday

KAMLOOPS — Fire prohibitions are set to begin next week. 

As of noon on Tuesday the size of open fires will be restricted at elevations below 1,200 metres in the Kamloops Fire Centre. 

Prohibited activities in those areas include the burning of more than two open fires at the same time, stubble or grass fires of any size, the use of fireworks, sky lanterns, tiki torches or burning barrels, and the use of binary exploding targets. 

Campfires that are a half metre high by a half metre wide, and cooking stoves that use gas propane or briquettes are still permitted.

The prohibitions are intended to prevent human-caused wildfires, and will remain in effect until October 15th. 

Violators could face hefty fines of up to $100,000 if convicted in court, or be sentenced to jail time. Anyone who contributes to a wildfire may have to pay all firefighting and associated costs.
