KAMLOOPS — The Tournament Capital is looking to host yet another major sporting event, this time it’s the Canada 55+ Games.

Kamloops City Coucil has authorized city staff to submit a bid for the games in 2020.

The Canada 55+ Games are expected to have a similar feel to the BC Senior Games, which Kamloops hosted in 2013.

With the bid the city is committing to a $60,000 cash contribution to the Canada 55+ Games, however, the event is expected to generate more than $2 million in direct spending in Kamloops.

“The plan right now is for 17 different venues,” said the city’s Business Operations and Events Supervisor Sean Smith. “I believe there’s just over 20 different sports, so some venues will have more than one sport, and we would expect about 2,000 athletes to come to Kamloops from across Canada late August in 2020.”
