The end is not in sight for flooding woes from area creeks

KAMLOOPS — It looks like it’s going to be another week of high water in area creeks and streams. Temperatures will be above normal for much of the week. There’s a risk of thunderstorms today, and showers on Wednesday, which won’t be helpful for the high water situation. 

On major highways, we’ll know later today the state of the Trans Canada Highway near Cherry Creek, where traffic has been cut to one lane because the bank below the highway has been eaten away.

Experts are assessing the situation to determine whether or not there’s danger of further erosion. The problem area is around Lazy Acres Road.

Equipment is being brought in to deal with the issue. One nearby resident says a large chunk of the bank has been eaten away, and a hydro pole was undermined and fell into the creek. 

Further east, there’s a travel advisory in effect on the Trans Canada from Golden to Revelstoke at Heather Mountain in Glacier National Park because of a mudslide. There will be delays and possible closures from time to time.

Barnhartvale Road in Kamloops is still closed near the Community Hall,  in the 7200 block, after Campbell Creek spilled over the roadway on the weekend. There should be a further update later this morning. In the meantime, detour via Blackwell Road. 

And the TNRD issued more evacuation orders and alerts for the Nicola area and Guichon Creek yesterday. The Lower Nicola Mobile Home Park and four properties on Marshall Road were ordered evacuated yesterday afternoon. Several other properties on Marshall Road Carrington Street, Guichon Avenue and the Merritt- Spences Bridge Highway 8 are now on evacuation alert. 

 A bridge on Highway 8, just west of Merritt, was closed overnight pending an assessment by engineers, cutting that route until further notice — prompting the school district to close Nicola-Canford elementary and suspend school bus service beyond Guichon Creek today.

  A state of local emergency was also declared in Summerland, south of Kelowna, due to a landslide and water across Highway 97, while the Emergency Operations Centre says numerous evacuation orders or alerts are now in place within seven local governments around B-C.
