KAMLOOPS — A Kamloops man died in a snowmobiling mishap just outside of Barriere over the weekend.

Kamloops Search and Rescue Search Manager Alan Hobler says they were first notified of the incident around 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.

"We got called out to locate and perform a rescue on a snowmobiler that was trapped. Unfortunately, it was not a happy outcome. The weather was really bad as well so access to the individual proved to be pretty difficult and unfortunately by the time the rescue was completed (at 7:00 p.m.) the individual was deceased."

Hobler says the man was travelling with two friends who had tried to rescue him first before calling for help.

"It was a real freak accident. I'm not sure if anyone could have done anything different to change the outcome."

Andy Watson with the BC Coroners Service wouldn't release the man's name but said he was in his 50s.
