KAMLOOPS --- A man who hitched a ride with a commercial truck driver on Highway 5 is in custody in Kamloops after allegedly holding the driver at gunpoint during their trip south on Monday evening.

At about 6:30 p.m., the Clearwater and Kamloops RCMP received report that the hitchhiker, who was picked up near Avola, B.C., north of Clearwater on the Yellowhead Highway, was threatening the driver with a gun.

Police were able to spot the commercial vehicle as it made its way south, and near the weigh scales in Kamloops the RCMP were able to get the driver out unharmed.

The suspect was eventually taken into custody without incident. RCMP did not release specific details outlining where the hitchhiker and truck were going nor the hitchhiker's motive.

The incident required a temporary road closure at the weigh scale area.
