Mail theft caught on camera

KAMLOOPS — The managers of the Glynnwood Terrace apartments on Hugh Allan Drive in Kamloops say they want the person who stole their tenants’ mail caught.

The break-in and theft happened just after 2 o’clock Thursday morning.

Surveillance video shows a man wearing a parka using a bar to break into the locked front door of the building.

Resident Manager Linda Eyzenga told CFJC Today the man went straight for the bank of mailboxes in the lobby.

Eyzenga said, “He opened up all the mail boxes from the top. He took every single person’s private mail, left all the flyers, put it in a plastic bag and within ten minutes he was out of there.”

“It was done quick. Prying the door open — as you can see it was probably within a minute or so he had it open. He was done, probably the whole thing within 10 to 15 minutes. He wanted those mailboxes and he was gone. He did not walk through our building, so that’s what I felt good about.”

Eyzenga says she’s worried about identity theft and private information for her tenants.

“I was concerned about identity fraud, cheques, private information, bank statements. Someone was expecting Visa cards, one was expecting rings. I’m praying none of that was in there.”

She notes the incident has been reported to Kamloops RCMP, who have indicated this may not be the only mailbox theft from that night.

“It’s never happened here before, no. The police told me they have never been called here for this issue, or any real issues because it has always been good here. We have always had security cameras for peace of mind, but now we actually had to use them.”
