19 dogs seized from van in Valleyview

KAMLOOPS — RCMP have rescued 19 dogs after a local resident made an alarming discovery in Valleyview last night.

The citizen noticed the barking canines all contained in a van parked at a hotel and alerted police.

Officers investigating found five full grown Labrador Retrievers and 14 puppies inside the vehicle, all in apparently poor health with no safety measures taken to protect them during transport.

A Saskatchewan woman was issued a ticket for Transporting Living Animals Without Protection, and Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says it’s likely the woman runs a puppy mill.

“I can only speculate what somebody with a large number of puppies is doing. That speculation is, they are raising puppies to sell them,” explain Shelkie.

The animals have been turned over to Kamloops Bylaw Services, and Shelkie says the SPCA will eventually investigate whether charges are warranted under animal protection legislation.

“The [BC] SPCA will have to talk to the SPCA in Alberta. We’ve taken pictures of the dogs and the van they were being transported in, and they can determine the level of care they were given, and whether that level of care deserves further investigation or not.”

“[The owner] is aware the dogs have gone to the SPCA. They will determine the level of care that was given to them. Whether she can get them back if she applies for them, or whether the level of care is not there, in which case they will seize the dogs, and find homes for them.”
