Category 2 open fires, including fireworks, now permitted throughout Kamloops Fire Centre

KAMLOOPS — Burning prohibitions continue to be rolled back in the Kamloops Fire Centre.

Effective noon Wednesday (Sept. 18), the BC Wildfire Service says Category 2 open fires will be permitted throughout the Kamloops Fire Centre. Fireworks, sky lanterns, binary exploding targets, air curtain burners and burn barrels and burn cages are also permitted.

It comes after the wildfire service lifted the prohibition for campfires throughout the Kamloops Fire Centre on Aug. 28.

“The seasonal fall temperatures and significant precipitation over the last few weeks had a positive impact on the Kamloops Fire Centre’s fire danger rating,” the wildfire service states. “The widespread cooling temperatures and good overnight relative humidity recoveries, as well as the forecasted weather patterns, have made it so there are favourable conditions to rescind the Category 2 open fires prohibition.”

Category 2 open fires are classified as fires that burn material in one pile not exceeding two metres in height and three metres in width and stubble or grass over an area that doesn’t exceed 0.2 hectares. Fireworks, sky lanterns, binary exploding targets, air curtain burners and burn barrels and burn cages are also permitted. Municipal restrictions remain in place within municipal boundaries, such as those in place in the city of Kamloops.

However, Category 3 open fires remain prohibited until noon, Oct. 11, 2024, or until the order is rescinded.
