Aug 24, 2024 | 11:02 AM

Highway 1 is closed in both directions just west of Sicamous after a vehicle incident that took place on the RW Bruhn Bridge.

A semi-truck crashed through the railing of the bridge and into Sicamous Narrows on Saturday (Aug. 24) morning, according to a Columbia Shuswap Regional District media release.

A dive team has been called in to work on recovery efforts while the Shuswap Emergency Program works with the District of Sicamous to activate a response plan.

Sicamous Fire Rescue is reporting some people are going into the lake to retrieve items from the truck.

The CSRD asks that the public do not go into the water near the accident scene and avoid the area so emergency crews can work.

A dangerous goods spill report has been made to the Ministry of Environment as it appears diesel fuel has spilled into the lake, according to the release.

The CSRD notes the District of Sicamous municipal water intake is located in Mara Lake, a good distance away from the Sicamous Narrows.

Interior Health has no concerns for the municipal water system due to the incident, according to the CSRD.

The next Drive BC update is not anticipated until noon on Saturday.

(Update: The highway was closed to traffic in both directions as of noon on Saturday and Drive BC notes the next update is not scheduled until 4:30 p.m. on Saturday).

A detour is in effect via Highway 97A and Highway 97B.
