Increased police presence helps seize weapons and drugs related to Kamloops conflict: RCMP

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops RCMP credits an increased police presence in the seizure of additional drugs and weapons related to an ongoing drug trafficking conflict in the city.

Since May 5, Kamloops RCMP say nine guns, along with ammunition, knives, a hatchet, a machete, a baton, narcotics, including fentanyl, meth, cocaine, and crack and nearly $20,000 in cash believed to be associated with drug trafficking have been seized.

In a news release issued Friday (May 17), Kamloops RCMP Supt. Jeff Pelley says the detachment has received two Uniform Gang Enforcement deployments to go along with local support.

“This last week’s police presence should send a clear message to the drug traffickers in Kamloops who continue to prey on the vulnerable and threaten the sense of safety and security of our residents: there is no place for you here,” Pelley states. “The additional enforcement is intended to address the ongoing effects of a conflict between two drug traffickers, which is believed to have begun in March.”

Pelley adds that Kamloops residents can continue to expect increased police focus on those associated to the local drug trade heading into the long weekend.

Kamloops RCMP warned residents of an increased risk to public safety due to two men who appear to be at the centre of a drug trafficking conflict: 40-year-old Cameron Ronald Cole and 25-year-old Justin Christopher Hunt. The warning followed multiple targeted shootings earlier in May.
