VICTORIA — Snowpack conditions in Kamloops and area have moderately improved since the start of 2024 but they are still below normal for this time of year.

According to numbers from Feb. 1 from the B.C. River Forecast Centre’s (BCRFC) Snow Survey and Water Supply Bulletin released Thursday (Feb. 8), the provincial snowpack remains very low, averaging 61 per cent of snow for this time of year.

The North Thompson and South Thompson basins are at 73 per cent and 81 per cent normal snowpack respectively, up from 60 and 73. The Middle Fraser and Lower Fraser are both extremely low, sitting at 59 per cent and 47 per cent respectively.

The BCRFC says low snowpack and seasonal runoff forecasts, along with warm seasonal weather forecasts and lingering impacts from previous drought, are continuing to create increased drought hazards for the spring and summer.

“The first week of February was drier than normal. Weather forecasts for the upcoming seven-to-10 days predict continued relatively dry conditions through the province,” the BCRFC states.

The BCRFC notes there are still three or more months left in the snow accumulation season. However, while conditions may slightly change, current low snowpack trends are expected to continue.

Another snow bulletin is scheduled for March 8.
