PEARCE: Overloaded classrooms
WALK INTO many classrooms today and one reality becomes immediately clear: there are simply too many students for one teacher to effectively support. While class size has long been debated, growing scientific research is beginning to show just how deeply overloaded classrooms affect both student learning and teacher wellbeing.
From a cognitive perspective, learning is not a one-size-fits-all process. Students develop at different rates and require varying levels of attention, feedback and support. Research shows that smaller class sizes are associated with improved academic outcomes, particularly in early grades, where foundational skills are built. When classrooms become overcrowded, individualized attention decreases and students who struggle are more likely to fall behind unnoticed.
There is also a neurological component to consider. Learning depends heavily on attention, working memory and emotional regulation – systems that are easily disrupted in noisy, overstimulating environments. Studies in educational psychology have found that high-density classrooms can increase cognitive load and reduce students’ ability to focus and retain information.
For teachers, the impact is equally significant. Managing large groups of students requires constant multitasking, emotional regulation and decision-making under pressure. Over time, this chronic demand can lead to burnout. Research has linked high workload and classroom stress to increased rates of teacher attrition, anxiety, and other health-related issues. When experienced teachers leave the profession early, students lose access to some of the most skilled educators available.
