Bi-weekly organics collection schedule here to stay for this winter: Kamloops council

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops council has voted on continuing with the current solid waste collection model adopted in August of 2023.

At Tuesday’s (Dec. 5) meeting, city council stated it hasn’t been long enough to see the benefits of the system, deciding to pursue it further and direct staff to report back to council on recommendations and results in the new year.

The current model consists of a weekly organics collection from March 1 to November 30, shifting to a bi-weekly organics collection from December 1 to February 28, 2024. Furthermore, a year-round alternating bi-weekly garbage and recycling collection is also in place.

Residents raised concerns over a bi-weekly waste collection method during the holidays, where households generate from two-to-five days of extra waste due to higher consumption. Citizens were also concerned of piling garbage for extended periods of time in their homes.
