Highway 1 through Fraser Canyon closed ahead of heavy rainfall

KAMLOOPS — Drivers travelling between Kamloops and the Lower Mainland will need to avoid the Trans Canada Highway through the Fraser Canyon Monday (Dec. 4) night.

In a news release issued Monday morning, B.C.’s Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure announced it will close the stretch of Highway 1 through the Fraser Canyon at 7:00 p.m. as a precaution. It’s due to heavy rainfall and rain on snow at higher elevations in the forecast that could overwhelm the area affected by the Kookipi Creek wildfire over the summer.

In a rainfall warning online, Environment Canada says between 40 to 60 millimetres of rainfall are expected for the Fraser Canyon from Monday afternoon to Tuesday morning. The weather agency says up to 40 millimetres of rain is expected for Lytton while Boston Bar can receive 60 millimetres.

Highway 1 will be closed between Boothroyd and Siska, nearly nine kilometres south of Lytton, from 7:00 p.m. Monday until an assessment can be conducted mid-morning on Tuesday. The province says checkpoints will be set up on Highway 1 just outside of Hope and Lytton.

The Coquihalla Highway from Hope to Merritt and Highway 3 from Hope to Princeton will remain open although the province warns drivers that rain and snow are forecast for both roadways.

Anyone travelling between the Lower Mainland and the Interior are encouraged to prepare for delays by carrying food, water and blankets. Drivers are also asked to move over to the side of the road when they see a vehicle with an amber light approaching.
