KAMLOOPS — Two handguns and approximately half a kilo of suspected fentanyl were found during a traffic stop during the weekend in Valleyview, leading to three arrests.

On Sunday (Nov. 26) at around 4:30 p.m., a Kamloops RCMP officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle with a partially obstructed license plate in the 1700-block of the East Trans Canada Highway.

Upon further inspection, the officer recognized the driver as a male with a previous history of firearms offences. Considering the individual’s previous record and the risks associated with the situation, the officer requested backup.

Kamloops RCMP Officer in Charge, Supt. Jeff Pelley, stated the driver became quickly uncooperative, refused to step out of the vehicle and reached into his handbag multiple times, where a loaded firearm was later discovered.

Backup units arrived on scene and arrested the driver and his two passengers. A second firearm was then located in the back seat, next to one of the occupants.

The driver, a man from Surrey in his 20s, was held in police custody and later released. A warrant has been issued for his arrest.

The male and female passengers were also later released without process, pending the ongoing investigation.
