Officers removing non-compliant buoys from Shuswap Lake find sunken boat

TAPPEN, B.C. — Transport Canada officers conducting patrols for non-compliant buoys on Shuswap Lake recently came across an unreported sunken boat.

Officers tagged more than 300 buoys in the spring, asking their owners to remove them or bring them into compliance with regulations.

Last month, officers removed 28 buoys from the lake that were still against the rules.

Both Transport Canada and the Columbia Shuswap Regional District have regulations that govern buoys and docks. Buoys are non-compliant if they are the incorrect colour or size, or if they don’t have proper identification markings.

While officers were patrolling, they came across a submerged boat in the area of Tappen Bay. It was marked with a cautionary buoy until further steps can be taken to remove it from the lake.
