KAMLOOPS — A small number of repeat or prolific offenders commit a large number of crimes in Kamloops. In the hopes of better tackling that issue, the RCMP have a number of programs in place to identifying and police priority high-risk offenders.

The Mounties have a prolific offenders management program along with a repeat violent offender initiative. Commander of the Kamloops RCMP, Supt. Jeff Pelley, noted that the detachment has 16 prolific offenders currently within its priority program.

“Some of the repeat offenders, there are core individuals that certainly contribute to a number of file-load and file-drivers that certainly create a lot of turmoil in our community and they remain our priority,” said Pelley.

Pelley said the detachment does have a staffing capacity to focus on the repeat offenders when they are released from custody. To that extent, the latest crime figures for the community are showing a decrease in the last quarter.

“We have actually had a 20 per cent decrease to break-and-enter to residences, a 72 per cent decrease in stolen vehicles, and a 22 per cent decrease for armed robberies or robberies in general,” said Pelley. “We are progressive on those offenders who are committing the more serious offenses and are responsible for a number of crimes throughout our city.”
