VANCOUVER — A Burnaby filmmaker who has dedicated years to telling the story of a Kamloops resident who was an unlikely war hero is the recipient of a prestigious award.

The B.C. Achievement Foundation has named Jack Gin a recipient of one of its 2023 Community Awards.

Gin’s documentary, Finding Fred Lee, tells the story of one of the few Chinese-Canadians to enlist in the Rocky Mountain Rangers and serve for Canada in World War I.

“Through years of research and heartfelt storytelling, Jack has been able to inform the community of Kamloops about a long-lost son, and an underknown reserve army regiment,” said the foundation in a news release.

Gin was nominated for the award by the Kamloops Chinese Cultural Association.
