MONTE CREEK, B.C. — The Thompson-Nicola Regional District says 356 properties east of Kamloops have fire protection as of January 1, 2023.

Fire protection services are being provided by the Pritchard Fire Department until the newly created Monte Creek Fire Department is ready.

Residents in Monte Creek, Del Oro, Lafarge and the east end of Barnhartvale voted in favour of adding fire protection in May 2022. Since then, the TNRD has recruited 17 new volunteer firefighters, who have begun their training as certified exterior-level firefighters. That training is expected to wrap up in mid-2023.

“We have been impressed with the response by people in the Monte Creek area who have joined their local fire department. We want to thank residents for stepping into this role, and we all look forward to the establishment of their new Fire Department,” said TNRD fire protection services manager Jason Tomlin. “We also want to thank the Pritchard Fire Department for their dedication and their support in providing fire protection coverage for the Monte Creek area.”

At the same time, design work for a new fire hall in Monte Creek is underway. It will be located at 1215 Hook Road, a property donated by the late Ed Herman and his wife, Linda.

Between the time training is completed and the new hall is opened, Monte Creek firefighters will respond to calls out of the Pritchard Fire Hall.
