KAMLOOPS — Tk’emlups te Secwepemc is looking to join Kamloops and its Tournament Capital reputation.

TteS has put in a bid to host the 2027 North American Indigenous Games, which would welcome 6,000 participants to the area.

Kukpi7 Rosanne Casimir, a soccer player herself, is excited about the prospect of hosting the games on her territory.

“We are truly excited to be showcasing Tk’emlups te Secwepemc, but most importantly Secwepemcúl’ecw. We’re definitely going to be excited about that many participants, up towards 6,000 participants coming from all over Turtle Island,” Casimir told CFJC Today. “We’re looking forward to share in the beauty of what this part of British Columbia has to offer and to be able to share in the cultural values and the sporting events that will be taking place.”

Casimir hopes if Tk’emlups te Secwepemc is selected to host, the athletes, coaches and visitors from across North America learn more about its culture and the impact of residential school here.

“It is so important to know where we’ve been since the announcement of 215 to where we are at today,” she said. “It’s honouring our survivors, but it’s also giving hope for our younger generations, and by bringing sporting events here, it’s going to be able to uplift and create some positive change.”
