COLLINS: Here Comes That Rainy Day Feeling…again

Jun 10, 2022 | 5:01 AM

IN 1971, A BRITISH GROUP called the Fortunes put that song out. While the song was more about a dying relationship, the title lends itself a bit to what we’re going through right now.

With the North Thompson level at 175 per cent of normal, and the South Thompson jumping to 157 per cent of normal. The flood watch has started again.

Some evacuations have been ordered for the small communities of Remo and Usk in my old stomping grounds along the Skeena River. Through spring, we’ve also seen high streamflow advisories in many communities along the Tulameen, North Thompson, and the Nicola near Merritt. Some residents are sandbagging, some are waiting.

The graph of the water level at the railway bridge at Riverside Park is going almost straight up. A lot of money has been spent by various governments on flood mitigation but I daresay if the water wants to find a way in, it will. Just like it did in 1972 at Oak Hills.

If you’ve been flooded in the past, you should have already been preparing. Officials can’t justify doing all the work for you. I don’t want to be the bearer of bad news, but if you bought in a low-lying area, you take some chances. Get prepared folks, it’s coming quickly.

To paraphrase an old Johnny Cash song, the boy keeps asking his dad “how high’s the water Papa”. Papa replies as the water gets higher and higher”. Eventually, he has to tell the boy they have to get out. It’s a true story about Cash’s youth.

I can recall back in 1972 driving around the streets of the city, watching people keeping an eye on the rising water. The good thing was, as has happened since, people have banded together to help each other.

With all the mitigation work, and the spirit of working together, we can make it through another spring full of uncertainty.
