More weekend rallies to come in support of Ukraine

KAMLOOPS — A local man held a “peaceful demonstration” on Saturday (March 5) to show solidarity with Ukraine, and he said he’ll keep holding them until the violence stops.

Oleksandr Sasha Kondrashov is a TRU professor who was born in Ukraine.

This weekend’s gathering was smaller than the one on the previous weekend. About 25 people showed up with signs and flags to show support for the nation.

“We want to make sure that we stand with Ukraine every week. And the idea is to make sure that there is visibility in Kamloops, a place where people can come during the week and show solidarity with the people of Ukraine,” said Kondrashov.

Kondrashov told CFJC Today that when the group gathered outside of City Hall in downtown Kamloops, every driver in every car honked their horn as they passed.

“It’s very impactful, he said.

The professor said that he plans to show up every week, but hopes he doesn’t have to.

“We don’t know, we really hope that the war ends and we don’t have to gather every week,” he said.

Kondrashov encourages those concerned with the safety of refugees fleeing Ukraine to come to next weekend’s gathering.

“If [in] any way someone wants to help, they can contact me by coming on Saturdays. And I will share possibly how to coordinate with them,” he said.
