Local fitness centres eager to rebuild consistency for gym-goers

KAMLOOPS — Thursday (Jan. 20), fitness facilities and gyms around B.C. were allowed to re-open under updated health guidelines. For fitness trainers and gym-goers in Kamloops, the easement comes as a relief.

Rob Petrie of F3FIT in downtown Kamloops is hoping closures won’t be required again so clients can continue with their wellness routines without major disruptions.

“With the inconsistency of being open and closed, open and closed, and getting forced to close… People aren’t sure if you’re open or if you’re not, what’s provided,” he says. “And then that creates some barriers because they don’t want to come or they can’t come.”

Petrie is among many facility operators who want the province to provide data around virus transmission rates within gyms. They’re still hoping that information will become available, not only for their own knowledge and safety planning, but for members as well.

“They come here for the community as much as the exercise,” Petrie explains, noting some of his members are seniors who thrive on the routine of coming to the gym. “Keeping it safe here and making sure that they feel safe is the number one thing that I want. And the data would help with helping them feel safe or knowing why they can’t come, or if they can come.”
