Active COVID-19 cases decrease in B.C. and Interior Health; provincial hospitalizations rise

KAMLOOPS — Interior Health is continuing to account for a smaller percentage of B.C.’s new COVID-19 cases.

Between Sept. 17 and 20, the province is reporting 1,692 new cases of COVID-19 — an average of 564 per day — with 371 of them in Interior Health.

Provincially, there are 5,608 active cases of COVID-19 in the province (down by 423 since Sept. 17), with 1,183 of them in Interior Health (down by 316). Of the provincial active cases, 307 individuals are hospitalized (up by nine) with 156 in intensive care (up by 21). The remaining people are recovering at home in self-isolation.

There were 11 new deaths over the three-day stretch, none of them in Interior Health. The provincial death toll is 1,899.

Elsewhere, there were 533 new cases in Fraser Health (1,732 active), 345 in Northern Health (1,037), 239 in Vancouver Coastal Health (988), and 204 in Island Health (661). There were no new cases from people who reside out of Canada, although seven cases are still active.

The daily breakdown is as follows:

  • Sept. 17 to 18: 644 new cases
  • Sept. 18 to 19: 613 new cases
  • Sept. 19 to 20: 435 new cases

There are 21 active outbreaks in long-term care, with 13 of them in Interior Health. That includes Overlander, Kamloops Senior Village, Hillside Village in Salmon Arm and the Hamlets at Westsyde.

As of Sept. 20, 86.8 per cent (4,024,302) of eligible people 12 and older in B.C. have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine, while 79.4 per cent (3,679,181) have received their second.

Vaccine status

Between Sept. 10 and 16, there were 4,749 COVID-19 cases reported, with 68.8 per cent (3,268) of those from unvaccinated individuals, 7.5 per cent (355) from partially vaccinated and 23.7 per cent (1,126) from fully vaccinated.

In that timeframe per 100,000 population, 313.7 were unvaccinated, 91.6 were partially vaccinated and 28.6 were fully vaccinated.

Over the past two weeks (Sept. 3 to 16), there were 401 COVID-19 hospitalizations. Unvaccinated individuals accounted for 79.6 per cent (319), partially vaccinated 5.5 per cent (22) and fully vaccinated 15 per cent (60). Per 100,000 population, unvaccinated individuals had 44.9, while partially vaccinated had 8.7 and fully vaccinated had 1.4 hospitalizations.
