Nanaimo’s development approval process to speed up with new online site

NANAIMO — The overwhelmed development permit process in Nanaimo is expected to become easier with provincial money.

Nanaimo received $500,000 from the ministry of municipal affairs to speed up the development approvals process through an online portal.

The online site and dashboard is designed to make it easier for developers to submit documents and staff to review them, as well as creating better standards for submissions.

“This grant will help increase customer service by reducing development approval processing times, improving development approval process transparency and providing clarity and consistency on application submission requirements,” mayor Leonard Krog said in a release.

The pace of Nanaimo’s development permit process has remained slow in recent years.

A consultant in March told city councillors the City wouldn’t be able to hit its approval targets due to a limit on staff resources.

Efforts to fast-track smaller low-risk residential and tenant improvement projects was hoped to allow staff the time necessary to focus on larger projects.

Nanaimo was one of 43 local governments to receive funding for the development process, including the Regional District of Nanaimo, which landed $457,000.
