Forecast shows a chance of showers across the Kamloops Fire Centre to start the week

KAMLOOPS — The wildfire situation in B.C. has calmed down over the previous two weeks, including in the Kamloops Fire Centre, and the weather could provide more relief early this week.

Environment Canada’s forecasts as of Sunday (Aug. 29) show a chance of showers between Monday and Wednesday for communities such as Kamloops, Merritt, Salmon Arm, Vernon, Lytton, Cache Creek, and Kelowna.

Fire Information Officer Taylor MacDonald says the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) is anticipating some cooler temperatures and some precipitation over the upcoming days, but its impact on the wildfires depends on how much rain they receive, and which hot spots will see it.

“Overall, things have been relatively quiet,” MacDonald says. “More resources are freed up on some of the fires to support on some of those more active fires, like the White Rock Lake wildfire. We’ve seen some of those fires move into that ‘being held’ status, which is always great to see. That’s not to say our season is over by any means; we’re still in the hot and dry conditions of summer.”
