Active COVID-19 cases drop throughout Island Health and central Island area

NANAIMO — The COVID-19 rollercoaster continues in Island Health and the central Island area.

The health authority announced 29 new cases on Wednesday, Aug. 18, higher than the day before. However, active cases dropped by four to 278.

In the central Island area, eight new cases were discovered as the number of active fell by 10 to 86.

The number of people in Island Health hospitals remains at seven but the number of patients receiving intensive care rose to five.

There is a data discrepancy between Island Health and the province, based on the timing of COVID-19 results. NanaimoNewsNOW reports local verified data from Island Health.

Island Health had the fewest new COVID-19 cases announced.

Across B.C., another 553 new cases were reported on Wednesday, primarily in Interior and Fraser Health.

The province is grappling with 5,580 active COVID-19 cases, with 107 people in hospital and 53 of them receiving intensive care.

One new fatality in Fraser Health and a new outbreak in Interior Health were reported.
