Sun Peaks back to full operation this weekend

WHITECROFT, B.C. — It’s a rare bit of hopeful news on the B.C. wildfire fight.

Operations at Sun Peaks will resume as normal tomorrow.  A social media report from @SunPeaksResort this morning says the following:

“Sun Peaks is ready to welcome you back! Sun Peaks will be fully operational this weekend. Lift-access hiking and biking will be available starting this Saturday. Thanks to all the firefighters and community volunteers for the support.”

 

Thursday evening (July 22), the Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) rescinded an evacuation order for Whitecroft and its surrounding area, putting residents on alert.

That means residents of 139 properties are allowed to go home, though they must be ready to leave on very short notice.

The following properties are affected:

  • 2720 Heffley-Louis Creek Rd;
  • 2765 Heffley-Louis Creek Rd;
  • 2789 Heffley-Louis Creek Rd;
  • 2810 Heffley-Louis Creek Rd;
  • 2817 Heffley-Louis Creek Rd;
  • 2845 Heffley-Louis Creek Rd;
  • 6225 Lake Bay Rd;
  • 7305 to 7408 Cahilty Cres;
  • 3208 to 3229 Cahilty Pl;
  • 7116 to 7200 Cahilty Rd;
  • 2893 to 3540 Heffley-Louis Creek Rd;
  • 3240 to 3260 McGillivray Creek Rd;
  • 3140 Strachan Rd;
  • 3220 and 3272 Sun Peaks Rd;
  • 6420 to 7046 Upper Louis Creek Rd; and
  • any other properties within the boundary on the map below:

Meantime, an alert put in place for 148 properties in the Heffley Lake area, giving residents there the all-clear.

The properties affected are listed here:

  • 6555 to 6596 Fawnhill Rd;
  • 2484 to 2496 Fisher Rd;
  • 2544 to 2592 Golden Horn Rd;
  • 2304 to 2476 Heffley Lake Rd;
  • 1840 to 2510 Heffley-Louis Creek Rd;
  • 5854 to 6101 Lake Bay Rd;
  • 6234 to 6433 Lakeshore Rd;
  • 1860 to 1930 Lakeview Dr;
  • 6447 to 6593 Lower Heffley Lake Rd;
  • 2320 and 2321 Shaw Rd;
  • 5980 to 6640 Yates Creek Rd; and
  • any other properties within the boundary on the map below:

The municipality of Sun Peaks has also cancelled its evacuation alert.

The alerts were initially put in place due to the nearby Embleton Mountain fire. Thursday, B.C. Wildfire Service officials said the fire had not grown for 24 hours, allowing crews to address all spots over existing guards.
