Brief flare-up, heavy wind near Juniper-Valleyview fire site

KAMLOOPS — There were an anxious few moments for some Juniper Ridge and Valleyview residents Wednesday afternoon (July 7) after a very small holdover fire from Canada Day restarted briefly.

The single tree fire was called in at about 2:30 Wednesday afternoon and quickly turned into smoke and could be seen from Cheakamus Drive in East Juniper.

There were firefighters watching the smoke from Juniper, while Kamloops Fire Rescue personnel scoped it out on the ground.

The smoke comes nearly a week after a fire threatened both Juniper Ridge and Valleyview on the evening of July 1.

With another thunderstorm watch in effect, the winds were extremely strong in the valley in the afternoon, raising concerns the single-tree fire may spread.

The B.C. Wildfire Service was called in to bucket the fire with water.

The wind also kicked up dust and ash from the Canada Day fire that mimicked smoke.

An hour later, calls were coming in from McKay Place in Valleyview.

However, Kamloops Fire Rescue couldn’t see any sign of fire.
