KAMLOOPS — The story of 100,000 British children being sent to Canada, through the art and words of a Grade 7 student, was recognized with the 2021 Heritage Stamp.

Juniper Ridge Elementary’s Ava Crabtree won the contest held by the District Heritage Fair Committee. The stamp contest is held yearly as part of the Heritage Fair. It is designed to inspire students to learn the history of their families, communities and cultures.

The British Home Child program took place between 1869 and 1930 when British children from poor families were sent to Canadian farms.

“Most of these children had not been on the streets, but instead came from families who had fallen on hard times due to sickness or death of one of their parents,” Crabtree wrote. “It is believed that at least 10 per cent of Canada’s population is tied to the British Home Children. My great, great grandfather William Granger was one of these children. Like many of the children he spoke very little of his experiences, however it is thought that after his mother died, his father wasn’t able to care for him and therefore was forced to give him up.”
