B.C. records 1,462 new cases of COVID-19 over the weekend; 79 in Interior Health, 144 variant cases

VICTORIA — As the B.C. government begins to make appointments for those in Phase Two of its COVID-19 immunization plan, the province continues to see elevated spread of the virus.

In a briefing Monday (Mar. 8), Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry reported 1,462 new cases of the virus over the past three days — 545 cases on Saturday, 532 on Sunday and 385 on Monday.

Seventy-nine of those new cases were found within Interior Health.

There have now been a total of 84,569 cases of the virus is B.C. since the pandemic began, spread out as follows:

  • 19,713 — Vancouver Coastal (up by 407)
  • 49,578 — Fraser Health (up by 802)
  • 2,587 — Island Health (up by 72)
  • 7,634 — Interior Health (up by 79)
  • 4,901 — Northern Health (up by 102)
  • 156 — Reside outside of Canada (unchanged)

Henry reported 144 of the new cases over the weekend are considered variants of concern, bringing B.C. to a total of 394 variant cases, 87 of which remain active.

There are a total of 4,854 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C. Monday, down 47 from Friday. Two-hundred-forty people are hospitalized with 66 in critical or intensive care.

Within Interior Health, there are 353 active cases of COVID-19, down 12 from Friday. Twelve people are in hospital, including six in critical care.

Eleven more people have died of the virus, raising the provincial death toll to 1,391. One of those deaths took place in Interior Health, lifting the regional death toll to 108.

A total of 8,723 people are under active public health monitoring due to direct contact with COVID-19.

The number of people considered fully recovered is now 78,237, or 93 per cent of all recorded cases.

Meantime, Henry says 333,327 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered, 86,925 of which are second doses.
