KAMLOOPS — WorkSafeBC is not recommending any further measures at the work site for the Patient Care Tower in Kamloops following an outbreak of COVID-19.

WorkSafeBC conducted an inspection of the site on Nov. 3 after a group of workers tested positive for the virus. Interior Health later declared an outbreak at the site.

The occupational safety officer conducted the inspection remotely due to reports of positive and suspected cases of COVID-19. An on-site inspection has not been completed by WorkSafeBC.

In an interview with the prime contractor, EllisDon, WorkSafeBC learned the project was nearing the lockup stage, which involved an escalation in work activity. This brought approximately 350 workers from multiple employers to the site at different times and on different days.

WorkSafeBC also learned a mask requirement was implemented one week before the inspection and health screenings were to be completed online each day.

According to Interior Health, there are currently 10 cases of COVID-19 directly linked to the Patient Care Tower outbreak.
