Group of workers at RIH Patient Care Tower project test positive for COVID-19

KAMLOOPS — Interior Health says a group of workers building the Patient Care Tower at Royal Inland Hospital has tested positive for COVID-19.

However, IH says the issue is not classified as an outbreak because “the exposure was limited to a crew who did not mingle with others on site.”

In a statement, IH goes on to say it is confident the hospital area and staff were not exposed, and that the movement of the workers involved was “limited around the hospital and within the community.”

There is no word on how many workers tested positive for the virus.

Medical Health Officer Dr. Carol Fenton tells CFJC Today all the affected workers are from outside of Interior Health, so this group will not be reflected in the IH COVID-19 totals. Fenton says the entire crew lived together.

The primary contractor, EllisDon, shut down construction Monday (Nov. 2) “out of an abundance of caution” after the exposure was confirmed.

The workers are now self-isolating and public health teams are completing contact tracing.
