LEGASSIC: Sticking to a healthy lifestyle and trying not to over-indulge during the holidays

Dec 10, 2019 | 4:12 PM

It seems like everywhere I go during the month of December, there are oodles of savoury, sweet and overall delicious dishes.

It can make sticking to a healthy regimen extremely difficult.

I went to my first official holiday party of the season this past weekend, where there were offerings of ribs, chicken wings, chili, bread, sweets, and too many other treats to name.

I knew starting a healthier journey in December was going to be difficult, so I came to the party prepared — veggie tray in hand — to keep myself satisfied instead of reaching for the temptations.

That’s one of the tips Canada’s Food Guide offers this time of year. Whether you’re hosting or attending, prepare healthy dishes to share and enjoy.

But don’t deprive yourself and don’t feel bad for indulging once in a while! Sure, these things may not be the best for your health, but if you enjoy them in small amounts, it really won’t hurt.

This is a great time of year to load up your Pinterest board with healthy food options so you’re not chaining yourself to celery sticks during holiday celebrations. With more people choosing to eat healthier, there are some amazing recipes you can experiment with and share with your loved ones.

It’s easy to lose track of what you’re eating if you’re distracted by conversation and there’s a full spread of food. Take some time to be mindful and notice when you’re full.

Most of all, ENJOY YOUR FOOD! Don’t beat yourself up for trying that dish that looks amazing — just don’t overdo it. Canada’s Food Guide says eating foods you like without judgment can help you develop a healthy relationship with food, which is so important when you’re committing to living a healthier life.

Exercising regularly can be tough during the holidays. We’re often consumed with running around to get Christmas shopping done, decorating, wrapping, baking, etc. With the prominence of YouTube influencers, there is an endless amount of quick at-home workouts to do. If all you can do is 20 minutes — that’s fine! It’s better than nothing.

But if exercising is something you enjoy doing, plan ahead and mark it into your schedule so that you can actually work out. Whether it’s going to the gym, for a hike, skating, playing hockey, or playing in the snow with your kids, anything counts.

I’m not an expert, so use these tips if they work for you. If they don’t there are so many resources online to help you through the holiday season!
