Canfor announces holiday season curtailments at all B.C. mills

KAMLOOPS — The crisis in the B.C. forest sector is deepening.

Canfor has announced it will take a two-week curtailment at all of its B.C. sawmills, spanning December 23 through January 3. Operations will resume on January 6.

The only exception is the WynnWood mill, which will only be curtailed for five days.

In a news release, Senior Vice President of Canadian Operations Stephen Mackie says the high cost of fibre and continued weak lumber markets have made conditions in the province’s industry “uneconomic.”

“We deeply regret that our employees have been impacted by multiple curtailments in 2019,” said Mackie, “we know it has been a difficult year for our employees, contractors, their families and the local communities.”

The shutdowns will take nearly 58 million board feet out of production.
