Kamloops City Council to consider implementing paid parking at downtown parkades on Saturdays

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops City Council will consider this week whether to charge for parking at the Lansdowne and Seymour parkades on Saturdays come the New Year.

As of January 1, 2020, the City is slated to take over operating the Seymour Street and Lansdowne Street parkade. Right now, the parkades have free parking on Saturdays, but City staff is recommending that changes, with a proposed cost of $1.25 per hour for the first two hours and $2.50 for the third hour.

In a report to council that will be heard on Tuesday, staff says the City’s other off-street surface lots near the parkades have paid parking on Saturdays.

“An important part of a successful parking management strategy is consistency in rates within specific areas,” the report states. “To accomplish this consistency, Administration is recommending that Council align the Saturday parking rates to include pay parking at both parkades.”

A new gated technology system is being installed for the parkades which will provide more payment options for customers, and automate the parkades with updated technology.

Staff estimates that revenue will be between $62,000 and $78,000 per year, which is recommended to go toward the Downtown Parking Facilities Solutions Infrastructure Reserve.

“Ticketing will not be an issue in the parkades due to the gated technology system currently being installed,” the report states. “Bylaw Officers will continue to patrol for security reasons during operational hours.”
