Environment Canada advises travellers to the Lower Mainland to get their winter tires on

KAMLOOPS — Get your winter tires on early.

That’s the message for drivers heading over the high mountain passes toward the Lower Mainland this weekend.

Environment Canada’s Doug Lundquist says a bit of snow hit the Pennask Summit on the Okanagan Connector overnight, and it’s likely not finished.

“There’s more cold air moving down (Friday), so we could have maybe a few centimetres on the [Coquihalla] between Merritt and Kamloops at the highest terrain. But if a cell manages to go directly over the highway, it could be even five or 10 (centimetres),” said Lundquist, who notes accumulations could increase further south.

The forecaster has issued a special weather statement for much of the Southern Interior, though Lundquist says it’s not uncommon to see snow on the high elevations by this time of year.
