West Nile virus most active in August: Interior Health

KAMLOOPS — Interior Health has issued an advisory around the dangers of the West Nile virus. It says the species of mosquito that is most likely to carry the virus, becomes more active in August.

To prevent yourself from being infected, Interior Health spokesperson Leah Feist suggests residents should try to avoid outdoor activities during the hours around dawn and dusk, when the mosquitos are most active.

“If you’re in an area with lots of mosquitos, wear loose-fitting, light-coloured full length pants and a long-sleeved shirt,” said Feist.

Feist says mosquito repellents can also be applied to any areas of exposed skin although she warns you should avoid using any products that contain the chemical deet on any child under six months.

There have been five locally infected West Nile virus cases in the Okanagan since 2009. And last year the virus was found in a horse and some birds in the East Kootenay area.

The risk of becoming seriously ill from the virus is low, however the risk increases for the elderly and those with compromised immune systems.

Eliminating standing water near your home is one way to reduce the amount of breeding grounds for mosquitos.

“Identify and remove potential breeding areas on your property,” says Feist. “Empty saucers under flower pots, change water in bird baths twice a week, unclog rain gutters, and watch for stagnant water in backyard pools,” she adds.

Interior Health says installing and maintaining window screens will also reduce the risk of mosquitos from entering your home and biting during your sleep.
