Sit. Stay. Search: New documentary to feature search dogs of Kamloops

KAMLOOPS — A documentary focusing on the search dogs of Kamloops is one of two local projects to be chosen for $55,000 in funding.

Sit. Stay. Search. was chosen by Telus Storyhive for $50,000 in funding, and Creative BC stepped in to provide an additional $5,000 in funding for all B.C. projects.

The creative team includes Jennifer Stahn, Anthony Stahn, and Vesta Giles.

In a news release, the group says they were on hand when one of the handlers for Kamloops Search and Rescue was picking up their new puppy.

KSAR currently has two validated search dogs on the team, and there are roughly 15 validated search dogs across the province.

“The documentary will follow three local dogs and their handlers, each at different stages of the official search dog validation process — a new puppy trying to pass puppy assessment (yet to be named), a young dog that has passed puppy assessment (Ada) and a validated dog trying to stay validated (Ranger),” the release states. “We’ll explore what goes in to the training and why these volunteer handlers put so much time, money and effort in to the process.”

At least 75 per cent of filming and production must take place locally, and the same amount of the budget must be spent locally.

In total, 30 projects of B.C. and Alberta were chosen through a combination of online voting and a jury. Deadline for final cuts is June 1, 2020.
