VERNON — A tragedy at Kalamalka Lake Provincial park on the weekend.

RCMP say a 72 year old man fell from a cliff into the water. He was pulled from the water and taken to a boat launch, but was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident is being investigated by police and the coroner’s service.

The man was apparently hiking at the time. The incident happened on Saturday morning.

Police say about 10:00 AM, they were called to reports of a man falling from a cliff and then landing in the water.

Police added nearby witnesses tried helping the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

“This is a tragic incident for all those involved, including the citizens on the water who came to the aid of the man, via boat. However [they] were unable to resuscitate him,” said Vernon RCMP Const. Kelly Brett.

The trails are reported to be generally safe, but there are areas when trails lead to steep and hard-to-navigate areas.
