KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops Symphony Orchestra has its new executive director. The KSO’s board of directors announced the hiring of Daniel Mills Monday.

Mills succeeds Kathy Humphreys, who announced her retirement in January after nearly 30 years helming the symphony.

Mills, a Calgary native, was most recently the overseer of stewardship and giving at Arts Commons, Calgary’s major performing arts centre.

He has previously served as an administrator with the Honens International Piano Competition, the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, and One Yellow Rabbit Performance Theatre. Mills is also a classical trumpet player, according to a KSO news release.

“It is a great honour to be joining a cultural institution that has such an evident importance to the community,” Mills was quoted in the news release.

“I very much look forward to learning what the Kamloops Symphony means to the Thompson Valley, and how we can together continue its legacy as a source of civic pride. Equally, I eagerly anticipate engaging in meaningful relationships with all of the Symphony’s stakeholders, and determining how collaboration between our partners and patrons can help us achieve sustainable growth for the community as a whole.”

Mills begins his new role on June 17.
