KAMLOOPS — Fire crews and Sahali residents combined to prevent a grass fire from doing serious damage near Sahali Secondary School last night.

Platoon captain Daryl Cooper says they were called out around 8:00 PM to the grassy field which lies between the Trans Canada, the school and a number of residences.

He says a couple of people were having a smoke near the school when sparks caught onto the dry grass and started to spread. Nearby residents strung together garden hoses and kept the flames from spreading until fire crews arrived.

Since the main fire hall is just up the block, crews arrived quickly to put the fire out, and Cooper says they remained on scene for some time checking for hot spots.

He says the fire points out how serious the fire situation is right now and the need for people to be fire smart when they’re out and about.

He says the fire came close to a number of fence lines and could easily have spread to homes in the area, or the school.
