BARRIERE, B.C. — Barriere RCMP are reporting the latest instance of someone stealing from roadside signs.

In a news release, Cpl. Rob Welsman says the theft likely happened some time on Tuesday evening (May 21). The culprit took over $3,000 worth of batteries from a sign along Highway 5 near McLure. The sign warns drivers of nearby rock removal work.

The thief forced open devices near the signs to get at the batteries.

“Tampering with the road safety signs places motorists’ safety in jeopardy, and any assistance from the public in catching those responsible is appreciated,” said Welsman.

Earlier this month, thieves took solar panels from four electronic message boards near Cherry Creek. RCMP have not revealed if they believe the two incidents are related.

Welsman asks anyone with information on the theft to contact Barriere RCMP at (250) 672-9918 or Crime Stoppers at 1 (800) 222-8477.
