KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops Broncos Spring camp kicked off this weekend. With a new coach and a plethora of recruits the team is hoping to right the ship from last season’s winless campaign.

New Head Coach Rob Ellis is a familiar face, having coached the Broncos before in 2009 and 2010 before health concerns forced him to step down from the position. While at the helm of the Broncos’ ship, Ellis won 5 games and lost 15, but the head coach will be tasked with bringing a win back to Hillside Stadium. The last Broncos win came in the 2017 season finale against Chilliwack.

“When you have an 0-10 season, the goal is to improve. I think we’ve improved in every single position so far and we just have to keep the kids here and make sure they’re committed to the team but it looks really good for a positive season this year,” said Ellis.

Nicolas Nica is a quarterback recruit from the Chilliwack Huskers. He was a part of the team that turned around the Huskers and he says he knows what it takes to bring the Broncos back to prominence.

“I like to win. At the end of the day, winning is fun and you’ve got to change the culture here and you just have to win. Winning changes cultures,” said Nica.

The name of the game for 2019 isn’t a league championship but to lay the groundwork for a successful future and it’s players like Nica who have coaches excited this season.

“The kids that we have here, the players we have here are awesome. It’s probably the best quality of athlete I’ve seen in a long time.”

The Broncos’ season opener is August 3 when they travel to Kelowna to face the Okanagan Sun.
