POLICE SEARCHING FOR MOTHER AFTER BODY OF BABY FOUND

Police say it appears a baby girl may have been alive when she was abandoned in a Calgary parking lot on Christmas Eve. Staff Sgt. Martin Schiavetta of the homicide unit says an autopsy suggests the infant may have been alive when she was first left at the scene. He says more tests are required to determine a cause of death. The search for the child’s mother continues.

TWO CHILDREN KILLED NEAR VICTORIA

RCMP say two children aged 4 and 6 were the victims of a double homicide at a Vancouver Island home on Christmas Day. Mounties say the bodies were found in an Oak Bay, B.C., residence after police were called Monday at about 5 p.m. A man with undisclosed injuries was also found at the scene and taken to hospital. Investigators expect to be at the scene the rest of the week.

LIGHTS BACK ON FOR THOUSANDS IN NOVA SCOTIA

Thousands of Nova Scotia homes and businesses are back on the power grid after crews repaired power lines damaged by a major storm on Christmas Day. About 158,000 Nova Scotia Power customers were initially affected by blackouts but that number had dropped to around 7,700 by early today. Full power is expected to be restored by this afternoon.

OTTAWA PRESSES U.S. FOR RELEASE OF CANADIAN ON DEATH ROW

The federal government says a Canadian who’s been on death row in the United States for more than three decades should be granted clemency because he has “reformed his life” and received poor legal counsel when he was convicted. Ronald Smith, 60, and originally from Red Deer, Alta., has been on death row since 1983 after fatally shooting two young men near East Glacier, Mont.
