Clearwater girl dreams of being a police officer

CLEARWATER — For as long as 10 year old Kenzie Stelter could talk, she’s wanted to be a police officer.

The Grade 4 student at Raft River Elementary School in Clearwater recently channeled that goal into a profile of her local RCMP detachment for her Heritage Fair project.

The topic of the project was selected by each student and reflected on someone in their life that has provided them with a positive impact or something of heritage value in the community.

In her work, Kenzie focused her project on friend and neighbour, RCMP Cpl. Mark Labossiere.

Part of her work included visiting the detachment and interviewing members on what a typical day would look like working for the force.

“She was provided escorted access to the cell block, guard room, fingerprint and prisoner photograph area of the detachment,” says the BC RCMP. “At each room, she was very inquisitive and asked questions about the area to complete her report.”

Labossiere said he “was amazed” at how Kenzie’s questions hit at the core of why he and his colleagues became officers themselves.

“The questions that she asked weren’t what I expected from a young lady her age. The questions she asked were very interesting and hit to what we do and why we do it.”

Kenzie’s project was a success, being chosen to compete in the regional finals in Kamloops.

Her interest in the force clearly moved members of the Clearwater RCMP.

“We wish her all the luck and hope to see her wearing an RCMP uniform in the future.”
