Heavy rain, hail, provide chance to paddle down Saskatoon streets

Police dealt with a number of intersections left awash in runoff and vehicles stranded in high water, while Saskatoon Light and Power repaired four major outages before 10 p.m.

Related weather systems dumped a large volume of hail in the Cypress Hills region and pushed wind gusts to more than 100 kilometres an hour in Estevan, but dropped only minimal rain on Regina.

Vrolijk said a low-pressure system was moving through southern Saskatchewan on Monday, primarily along the Trans-Canada Highway corridor, when the pattern changed late in the afternoon.

“A line of very slow-moving thunderstorms developed pretty much right on top of Saskatoon,” he said. “It took over an hour for it to finally move through the city.”

Saskatoon resident Dave MacIntosh said he saw lightning hit a power line just down the street from his home.

“A big lightning flash then a crack and I just happened to glance down the street and you could see this light lighting up,” he said. “You could hear the power going through the lines still; they were kind of dancing on the grass.”

Kate Morrison was out disc-golfing with friends at a park when the storm hit.

“We ended up hiding under a tree using Frisbees as shields for our heads while we waited until we could make a break for our vehicle. Safe and sound but soaking wet for sure.” (CJWW, CKOM, CKRM)
