RareBirds Housing Co-operative seeking new member

KAMLOOPS — The RareBirds Housing Co-operative in Kamloops is looking to fill a vacancy, and bring in a new member or two to join their community.

RareBirds are a group of adults who live together in a large family-style, custom built home, with private living spaces for singles and couples. The 6,000 square-foot home was constructed in 2014, and sits on half-an-acre, close to downtown. Everyone shares expenses, a kitchen and multi-purpose room, but has their own private bedroom, bathroom and living area.

“We live very co-operatively, very sustainably, we’ve got solar heat and a very sustainably designed home, we talk about and think about the way we’re living in terms of our foot print on the earth and those things are all important to us, so we do share a value system I’d say,” says Mary Jordan, RareBirds Housing Co-operative.

One of the original RareBird members has recently moved out. Tonight, the group is hosting an information session at the home on West Battle Street, to showcase the Co-op Housing model and to try and attract a new member. RareBirds welcomes people of all ages, and over the past couple of years, the group has managed to live peacefully together.

“People have different ideas and different needs, and different wants, so we’ve developed some models, we’ve developed a whole thing we call our flight manual where we talk about different policies around guests, food, pets, communication, and people coming and going, all of the things that matter in day to day living. We meet regularly to make decisions and talk about how things are going,” says Jordan.

To learn more about sustainable community living, and if you’re interested in becoming a member of the RareBirds Housing Co-operative, you can attend the information session being held tonight, August 23, from 7pm to 8:30pm at the home on West Battle Street.
